Johan Lewin’s idea to form this organization came about when he was a Professional Deep Sea Diver while he was at Sea he met with an Accident, while deep in sea he stayed longer and he went out of Oxygen and he got the sickness called the “Decompression sickness”. He needed to be taken to a Decompression Chamber where he stayed for three months. After that he was paralyzed.
While in this condition he had this vision to work for the community. He prayed for his recovery and said that if God can make him to walk again he promises that he will work for his community.

After that really God gave him back the ability to walk again, then Lewin kept his promise to God he started the organization called Masibambane Community Project.
The name “Masibambane” means “Let us hold Hands".
The reason behind there was actually to unite the people of St. Helena Bay and of the broader West Coast region. Together with the community people were united in combating their problems and to strive for a “Better life for all.”
